Big Tech Spent $674B on AI. The Same Quarter, 92,000 Tech Workers Lost Their Jobs | 2026-05-12
Big Tech's four hyperscalers will pour USD 674-700 billion into AI capex in 2026, the same quarter 92,000 tech workers were laid off, and 76% of large firms have stood up a CAIO.
Investment Implications
Big Tech's $674B AI Spend and 92,000 Layoffs Landed in the Same Quarter — The Capital-Labor Decoupling Inflection of the AI Revolution
In the same quarter that 92,000 tech workers were cut over five months, the four biggest US hyperscalers committed roughly USD 674 billion to capex, and 76% of the firms in IBM's sample created a brand-new CAIO seat. The AI revolution is accelerating capital concentration and labor displacement at the same time, and the margin gap between infrastructure owners and headcount-heavy businesses is now widening quarter by quarter.
Global tech companies have laid off more than 92,000 workers in the first five months of 2026, with more than 45,000 cuts in April alone. In the same quarter, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon are on track to spend a combined USD 674-700 billion on AI infrastructure capex — more than double what they spent two years ago. Alphabet alone plans to lift 2026 capex on data centers and related infrastructure to as much as USD 190 billion, 2.1x the previous year. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said AI now writes more than 65% of Snap's code, while announcing roughly 1,000 layoffs (about 16% of full-time headcount) and a freeze on 300 unfilled roles. An IBM report covering more than 2,000 companies found that 76% have established a Chief AI Officer (CAIO) seat — up from 26% in 2025.
Until yesterday this looked like one-way expansion of the capital loop. Today, capital concentration and labor displacement showed up in the same quarter. An ILO report flags that 11.5 million jobs in Vietnam — across clerical, retail, and finance — sit inside the blast radius of generative AI tools. Pablo Hernandez de Cos, general manager of the BIS, points out that AI investment leans heavily on outside financing, particularly private credit, and that the supply chain firms inside that loop are tightly interconnected. Capital is concentrating with a small group of infrastructure owners; the workforce is being displaced at roughly the same pace.
The result, on a quarterly cadence, is a widening margin gap between AI infrastructure owners (semiconductors, hyperscale cloud) and IT services firms with people-heavy cost structures. The leading indicator is already on the table: USD 674-700 billion of Big Tech capex and 92,000 layoffs sitting in the same window.
