IEA's Largest-Ever Supply Disruption at 10.1M b/d, Korea Semiconductor Exports Surge to $32.8B
IEA records history's largest oil supply disruption in March, Korea's semiconductor exports surge 151% YoY to $32.8B, JPMorgan Chase Q1 earnings beat estimates
Investment Implications
Futures See $98. Spot Says $149.
North Sea physical crude hit $149 a barrel while Brent futures slipped below $98. This $50-plus gap exposes just how precarious the futures market's bet — that diplomacy will bring prices down — really is.
The IEA just recorded March as the largest oil supply disruption in history. Some 10.1 million barrels per day vanished from the market. Yet on the same day, Brent futures dropped below $98 a barrel on hopes for US-Iran negotiations. The physical market is telling a completely different story. North Sea Forties Blend surged to roughly $149 a barrel, pushing the spread over futures past $50.
Futures are pricing in diplomatic success. The physical market is reflecting the reality that barrels simply aren't available right now. This gap can only close in two ways: either negotiations succeed quickly and the Strait of Hormuz reopens, or futures chase spot prices sharply higher. One or the other.
The clearest beneficiary of this situation has already emerged. According to the IEA, Russia's oil and fuel export revenue reached $19.04 billion in March — nearly double the previous month's $9.75 billion. Russian crude exports rose to 4.6 million barrels per day, up 270,000 b/d. As Standard Chartered has noted, importers desperate for supply after the Hormuz blockade are turning to Russian crude.
India is a prime example. According to Rystad Energy, India purchased 1.5 million barrels per day of Russian crude in March, made possible by a 30-day US sanctions waiver that expired on April 11. Russia accounts for 35% of India's crude imports. Without an extension, India faces surviving on just 30 days of reserves. Twenty-six Korean tankers also remain stranded at the Strait of Hormuz.
The $50 spot-futures spread translates directly into costs for refiners. Airlines and shipping companies hedged in futures still face the gap between their hedged price and actual physical procurement costs. For a country like South Korea, where 70% of crude imports flow through Hormuz, this spread directly squeezes refining and petrochemical margins. Asian refining margins are likely to reflect this dislocation first.
