$650B AI Capital Meets Virginia's 50% Power Drain: US Nuclear Supply Chain at Inflection
Amazon's $200B AI CapEx, OpenAI's $10B-valuation JV, and Anthropic's joint-venture launch converge on a single day. Meanwhile, data centers already consume roughly 20% of Virginia's power and are projected to top 50% by 2030, while only 5 of 11 new US reactor projects have secured all three key contracts.
Investment Implications
AI Capital Lined Up on One Day. Virginia's Grid Couldn't Follow.
Amazon is pouring $200 billion of its 2026 capex into AI infrastructure. OpenAI is launching The Development Company at a $10 billion valuation, raising $4 billion from 19 investors. Around the same time, data centers already consume roughly 20% of Virginia's power and are projected to exceed 50% by 2030, while only 5 of 11 new US reactor projects have secured all three pillars: commercial offtake, project-specific financing, and construction. Capital is converging — power isn't following. How far this asymmetry pushes the pricing power of Korea's memory, HBM, and LNG-carrier supply chains over the next 12-24 months is the inflection point for investment judgment.
In a single day, the contours of AI capital sharpened again. Amazon announced its $200 billion 2026 capex plan in February, with most of it earmarked for AI infrastructure. On Mad Money, Andy Jassy said Amazon's AI business has cleared a $15 billion run rate after its first three years — 260x AWS at the same point. Around the same time, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI is raising $4 billion from 19 investors at a $10 billion valuation for a new joint venture called The Development Company, while the Wall Street Journal reported that Anthropic's new venture launched at a $1.5 billion valuation, with Anthropic, Blackstone, and Hellman & Friedman each committing $300 million. Add in OpenAI's $122 billion new round at an $852 billion valuation and Anthropic's $50 billion raise at a $900 billion valuation — both in their final stages by late March — and the capital is already moving in one direction. As Economic Times India noted, Meta's 2026 capex is also rising toward as much as $135B.
The problem is power. According to the Electric Power Research Institute, data centers currently consume about 20% of Virginia's power and could exceed 50% by 2030, with the AI boom adding roughly 15% to Virginia's energy consumption. The Global Risks Report 2026 warned that the AI revolution could push data-center power demand 30-fold higher within a decade, overwhelming grids, and that climate change will lift global data-center power consumption toward 20% by 2030-2035. A January 2026 report from Xylem and Global Water Intelligence projected that water withdrawals for data-center cooling will more than triple over the next 25 years as computing demand grows. Supply isn't keeping up. Of the 11 new US reactor projects analyzed by Third Way, only 5 have secured all three pillars — commercial offtake, project-specific financing, and construction. The DOE Office of Energy Dominance Financing (formerly LPO) closed a $2.65 billion loan facility in February for Southern Company's reactor fleet uprating — its largest deal ever. The Human Development Report 2025 noted that NVIDIA controls 92% of the GPU market, AWS and Azure together hold 58% of the cloud, and Big Tech controls 33% of total AI capital. Capital is concentrating in a few hands. Power is concentrating in a single state.
The asset class most likely to be repriced first is the US nuclear supply chain. To meet domestic data-center load, the US has to move on uprating existing fleets and signing new offtake contracts before greenfield builds can come online — and the fact that a $2.65 billion uprating deal now stands as the largest in agency history is itself a leading signal: capital is starting to route around the gap left by 6 of 11 new reactors that haven't yet locked in all three pillars.
